Preparation is key to a good read aloud. The teacher should read the book ahead
of time and think about different voices and gestures that might dramatize the story.

  Introduction activates prior knowledge, author, illustrator,    title, dedication
 

Predictions are made before reading

 

Teacher is familiar with the text

  Teacher reads with expression and changes voice
 

Props are prepared and used

 

Open-ended questions are asked

  New and interesting vocabulary is taught
  Children's interest in maintained
  Story is compared with other stories
  Children re-cap the story using new vocabulary learned from    the read aloud
 

Story is extended into literacy activities and center activities
