Blueprint for Early Literacy

CLI's comprehensive pre-kindergarten curriculum, Blueprint for Early Literacy®, recognizes that all children need experience with books and structured support to develop oral language and vocabulary and to build background knowledge. It brings proven methods for building the knowledge and literacy skills pre-kindergartners need into its teacher training, lesson plans, and instructional strategies, and it integrates these with quality children’s literature.

Blueprint is based on National Reading Panel and Early Reading First recommendations, and is designed to meet state and national standards for reading, writing, and oral language development.  These skills are taught in the context of 10 related, sequential themes.  At the heart of each theme are 130 award-winning children’s books, carefully chosen to introduce children to the delight of reading.  Lesson plans help teachers make each book a launching pad for teaching vocabulary, building comprehension, and developing phonemic awareness, phonics, and oral language skills. Blueprint themes–along with Blueprint author studies, center applications, and skill cards–build children’s content knowledge and develop literacy skills through engaging, rich, and meaningful learning in all the content areas including math, science and socio-emotional development.

Blueprint Materials include:

  • Ten Theme Boxes containing five read aloud books, three center applications, and a theme guide

  • Five Author Studies containing six books by the author, author study guide, and laminated author board materials

  • Teacher Resources Box containing curriculum support materials

  • Classroom Book Collection containing additional read aloud books
